New feature-packed Mobile Page Speed Tool from Google

Page Speed has been one of the major ranking factors for quite a few months now and Google have just released a Mobile Page Speed Tool, packed with new features. If you aren’t focusing on speed, you should be.

For years now, Google Page Speed insights has been offering very good information on how a webmaster can improve the page speed or page loading time of their web pages.

As the volume of mobile search keeps on rising, Google has improved the page speed test for mobiles where speed is far more important on a data connection. Prospective customers using their smart phones, mobiles and tablets want fast access to information without wiping out their data allowance.

Load times of up to five or ten seconds can really put the brakes on your customer as they browse through the site, especially in e-commerce where there will be a set path of 3-5 pages they’ll need to get through in order to purchase.

We all know that slower sites can experience increased bounce rates. These few seconds could be the difference between keeping visitors on your site or losing them – because these days people just aren’t willing to wait.

In fact, most sites lose half of their visitors while loading¹, and 46% of people say that the most frustrating thing about browsing on their phone is waiting for slow pages to load².

Here is Google’s take on this problem and what they have done by improving the Google Mobile Page Speed tool:

With a little help, we believe every business can have a faster mobile site. That’s why we’re launching a new set of features to test your site’s speed on Test My Site, which will show you:

  • Your site’s mobile speed: 50% of people expect a site to load in less than two seconds. Find out how fast your site loads.
  • The number of visitors you may be losing: When it comes to mobile speed, every second matters – for each additional second it takes a mobile page to load, conversions can drop by up to 20%. Learn how many people may be leaving your site during the time it takes to load.
  • How you compare to the competition: See how your business stacks up against others in your industry.
  • How to make your site faster: We’ll email you a personalized assessment with specific recommendations on how to speed up your site.
